Note on editions by  Patrick Wright

The Village that Died for England was first published in hardback by Jonathan Cape in 1995, and by Vintage in paperback the following year. The text in both these editions is poorly presented with many errors – some my fault but a lot due to the fact that the copy editor at Cape was made redundant while working on the book.  The text was corrected for the Faber edition of 2002, which is also revised throughout, including new material and also reinstating passages cut from the Cape edition in order to shorten the book.  It is the only reliable version of the text. All editions are presently out of print, a situation I hope to rectify as opportunities arise.

WARNING … ALL IS NOT QUITE AS IT SEEMS …

The ‘Tyneham Visitors Guide 2011’ (right) is heavily promoted through the online shop of ‘Dorset Tourist Information’ and is described as a ‘Top Seller’.

The online shop says ‘All The Tourist Information For Dorset’ and continues ‘We have found some of the best DVDs and guides that really show off the beauty of the wonderful county of Dorset.’

However, on further investigation the online shop sells a very limited range of items - in fact just seven items - six DVDs and the one ‘guide’ which seems rather narrow.

Digging deeper reveals the six DVDs offered by the online shop are ALL produced by Rodney Goodhand of RMG Wildlife based at the same address in Wareham, Dorset as Matt Goodhand, the registered owner of the Dorset Tourist Information online shop!

Despite the online shop claiming it has ‘66 items in stock’, the Tyneham Visitors Guide 2011 is only available in downloadable pdf format.  And not surprisingly it promotes the ‘Tyneham Remembered’ DVD produced by Rodney Goodhand.

The guide includes the statement ‘Copyright 2011 Tyneham.org.uk’ which does not exist. However another Tyneham website has recently appeared which unsuspecting visitors might think is ‘independent’ but it promotes the ‘Tyneham Remembered’ DVD produced by Rodney Goodhand and nothing else. Further investigation reveals that Matt Goodhand is the registered owner of that website too!

So be warned, all is not quite as it seems!
