William Upshall (1897-1973), known as Bill, lived with his wife Winifred Mary Upshall nee Symons (1902-1985) in the Shepherd’s Cottage at No. 4 The Row from 1924 to 1929. The family left Tyneham before the evacuation.
Bill was born at Winterbourne Clemstone near Blandford on 11 December 1897 and was baptised there on 16 January 1898. He was the son of Sylvester Upshall (1871-1948) and his wife Annie Upshall nee Ricketts (1874-1954). The family moved to Hazelbury Bryan by the time Bill was four years old. Bill’s older brother Stephen Upshall was killed in action in the First World War.
In March 1921 Bill was living with his parents at Winterborne Stickland. He was shown as an out-of-work asylum attendant having been employed previously at Bodmin Asylum in Cornwall.
Bill married Winfred Mary Symons aka Simmonds later in 1921 and a photograph of them on their wedding day is shown above.
Bill and Winifred had four children:
- Margaret Annie Elizabeth Upshall (1921-2004) – married Reginald Douglas Evans (1918-1973)
- Stephen Sylvester Upshall (1923-2001) –
- Alfred Raymond Percy Upshall (1927-2006) – known as Percy – born at Tyneham – married Beryl V Hutchins in 1952
- William Cyril Upshall (1930-2001) – known as Cyril – married Patricia M Summers in 1959
By 1939, Bill and Winifred had moved to Studland where he was employed as a general farm worker.
Bill died on 13 June 1973 aged 75. Winifred died in 1985 aged 83.
