The Wrixon Family lived at Povington Farm, Povington from c.1916 to 1943
Thomas Walter Wrixon (1885-1960)
Thomas was born at Netherbury, Dorset on 2 February 1885. He was the third child of nine born to groom Thomas Wrixon (1855-1932) and his wife Eliza Emma ‘Emma’ Wrixon nee Way (1860-1932).
Thomas married Eva May Gundry (1885-1967) at West Knighton, Dorset on 20 January 1913. Eva was the daughter of William Chillcott Read Gundry (1841–1915) and his wife Sarah Ann Gundry nee Cheney (1845–1909).
Thomas and Eva had five children:
- Frederick Thomas Walter Wrixon (1913-1996) – married Isabel Lilian Riddle (1907-1946) and then his first cousin Marjorie Joyce Wrixon
- Kathleen Muriel ‘Kathy’ Wrixon (1916-1962) – Kathy taught at Tyneham School where there was no talking, and knuckles were rapped when the pen was held incorrectly for handwriting – Kathy married Cyril Eyres Barnes (1912-1999) at Tyneham on 4 October 1938 and they had two sons and a daughter.
- Walter George Wrixon (1919-1995) – Walter was farming at Povington Farm in September 1939 – in 1942 married Brenda May Bowditch (1917-2013) – was a tenant at Manor Farm, Horton in 1944 but took the opportunity in 1949 to buy the 302 acre farm and four cottages for £12,500
- William Kenneth Wrixon (1922-1998) – Little Billy – married Molly Ethel Warren (1924-2000) in 1950 –
- Leonard John ‘Len’ Wrixon (1925-2001) – Len married Sheila Joy ‘Joy’ Hann (1928-2017) in 1956 and they had two sons and a daughter
In 1915 the family were living at West Knighton, Dorset where Thomas was publican at the New Inn. By October 1917, they had moved to Povington Farm.
In 1925 Thomas secured an ejectment order against George Waites:
In March 1932, Thomas’ parents, who lived at Oakley near Wimborne, Dorset, both died on the same day following influenza – father Thomas aged 76 at 3.30am and mother Emma aged 73 at 7.30pm. Their funeral took place on and they were buried together in a double grave at Canford cemetery.
Thomas and Eva remained at Povington Farm until the evacuation in 1943. The forced sale of their livestock and farm machinery took place on Wednesday 15 December 1943 at 11 a.m. The Western Gazette of 24 December 1943 gave details of the sale values achieved.
After the evacuation Thomas and Emma moved to Manor Farm at Horton, Dorset with son Walter. Shortly after moving their black and white long-haired terrier ‘Tim’ went missing:
By 1947 Thomas and Emma were at Pelsham Farm at Buckhorn Weston near Gillingham, Dorset.
Thomas later moved to Hillside, Old Hill, Wincanton, Somerset where he died on 24 February 1960. His widow Eva died in 1967.
