Frederick was born at Toller Porcorum, Dorset on 21 February 1864. He was the son of farmer Thomas Way (1840-1904) and his wife Anne Hayward Way nee Walbridge (1837-1906).

In 1881 the family were at Nether Kingcombe Dairy House and Frederick, aged 17, was shown as a Dairyman’s son. By April 1890 Frederick had moved to Tyneham.

Frederick married Bessie Elizabeth Mary Howard (1866-1954) at Frampton, Dorset on 8 April 1890. Frederick’s abode was given as Tyneham and Bessie’s as Southover. a hamlet near Tolpuddle, Dorset.

Bessie was born on 11 March 1866 at Owermoigne, Dorset. Her parents were Suffolk-born William Howard (1821-1906), a dairyman, and his second wife Maria Howard nee Suttle (1825-1905). Bessie was the sister of Charles William Howard (1860-1928).

In 1891 Frederick aged 26 and Bessie aged 25 were living at Tyneham Farm Dairy, along with Frederick’s sister Melissa Olga Way aged 22 and a dairy servant Albert Wort from Redlynch aged 19.

Frederick and Bessie had eight children, one of whom died shortly after birth:

  • Thomas Way (1891-?) – Thomas was born on 6 May 1891 at Tyneham and baptised there on 31 May 1891 – Thomas married Gertrude Mabel Cornick (1894-1968) at Folke, Dorset on 23 Apr 1918 – Thomas’ brother James was one of the witnesses – Thomas was living at Gussage All Saints, Dorset – in 1939 Thomas and Gertrude were at 5 Burcombe Lane, Wilton with baby daughter Jeannie
  • James Frederick Way (1893-1975) – James was born at Tyneham on 7 January 1893 and baptised there on 12 March 1893 – – did not marry – Wyke Farm, Wimborne St Giles
  • Reginald William Way (1895-1968) – Reginald served as a Gunner (152300) with the 102nd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery – Reginald married Adelaide Attwood on 26 November 1928 at Wimborne St. Giles, Dorset – Westwood Farm, Corfe Castle – Reginald died 13 November 1968

  • Cecil Arthur Edgar Way (1898-1982) – – did not marry – Wyke Farm, Wimborne St Giles
  • Hilda Dorothy Way (1900-1986) – married Josiah Humphrey Coombes (1895-1958)
  • Edgar Leslie Way (1902-1902) – died aged just 10 days
  • Gladys Ena Way (1906-2003) – Gladys was born on 12 October 1906 at Steeple and baptised on 26 November 1906 at Tyneham – in 1911 she was – did not marry – Wyke Farm, Wimborne St Giles
