William was born at Clyst Hydon, Devon on 21 February 1841. He was the son of shoemaker John Hart (1804-?) and his wife Mary Hart nee Hayman (1810-?). William had a younger sister Edith who died shortly after her birth in 1844.

In March 1851 the family were living ‘near the church’ at Clyst Hydon.

William married Sarah Anne Horsham (1846-1911) at Sidbury, Devon in the spring of 1868. Sarah was the daughter of John Horsham (1816-1886) and his wife Sarah Salway Horsham nee Carnall (1821-1884).

By March 1901 William and Sarah were living at Peatons Farm, Lytchett Matravers, Dorset. The jury lists show William Hart as the occupier of a farm at Lytchett Matravers as early as 1897.

Sarah died in March 1911 aged 65 and William died six years later in June 1917 aged 76. They were both buried at Lytchett Matravers.
