There are at least three House Family lines associated with Tyneham parish – no genealogical connection between the three lines has yet been established.
- Reverend Thomas Hammond House (1818-1891) was Curate at Steeple-cum-Tyneham.
- Herbert John House & Family were living at Povington from at least 1915 and then at North Egliston Farm from at least 1931 until the evacuation in December 1943.
- Frederick Walter House (1867-1936) was living at Baltington c.1917 1
One as yet unidentified person with the surname House is also associated with the parish of Tyneham:
House 1 Family
Reverend Thomas Hammond House M.A. (1818-1891)
Thomas attended Worcester College, Oxford and was ordained priest at Salisbury Cathedral on 24 September 1843. 3
Thomas was nominated in April 1845 to be Curate at Steeple-cum-Tyneham. 4 He was living at South Egliston at the time of his marriage to his first wife Elizabeth Crane on 26 October 1847. Sadly Elizabeth died at Tyneham on 16 November 1849 aged 25. She was buried at East Stoke, Dorset on 23 November 1849.
Thomas became Vicar of Winterbourne Anderson in August 1855 Thomas was appointed to be Rector of Winterborne Zelstone. 5
Thomas married Julia Hector (1831-1866) of Blandford St Mary on 17 July 1862. Thomas and Julia had four children including twin girls:
- Harry Hammond House (1863-1958) –
- Edward Hector House (1865-1904) – died 8 November 1904 aged 40 at Elm Grove, Hill Butts, Wimborne
- Julia Hector House ( ) –
- Elizabeth House ( ) –
Thomas died on 3 January 1891 at Anderson Rectory and was buried in the churchyard there on..
Harry Hammond House (1863-1958)
Harry attended Sherborne School and then Corpus Christi College, Oxford.
Harry was Housemaster at Malvern College for over 30 years.
Harry married Kate Charlotte Sorensen (1869-) at St. Bartholemew’s Church, Sydenham on 12 April 1893.
Harry and Kate had children:
- Godfrey Edward Hammond House (1894-1980) –
- Harry Wilfred House (1895-1987) – Harry was Headmaster of Wellington College from 1941 to 1956
- Malcolm Hutchinson House (1897-1917) – killed in action in WW1
- Katherine Margaret House (1900-1997) –
Godfrey Edward Hammond House (1894-1980)
Godfrey married Gwynedd Helen Lightfoot Harrison (1896-1985) and they had six children:
- Morna Frances Helen House (1923-2009) – Morna was a Registered Physiotherapist – in 1946 she was living at the Old Vicarage, Kimmeridge – Morna married Derek James Pratt (1917-2002) – they are believed to have had a son and twin daughters
- Patricia Hope House (1924-1924) – sadly Patricia died aged just 4 months – she was buried at Mill Road Cemetery, Cambrige
- John Edward Murray House (1927-2009) – ‘Joe’ emigrated to Australia – it is understood he had a leg amputated after a lorry he was driving overturned
- Diana Isabelle H House (1930-2013) – married Gerhard Gerald Ernest Muhsam – also married Eugene Velicov – she “spent her childhood with her grandfather H. H. House at South Tyneham Farm between 1933 and 1942 and moved into Kimmeridge Vicarage a year before the evacuation” – Diana lived in New Jersey
- Alan Godfrey Hector House (1925-2021) – married Barbara and had a daughter Judith – Alan died peacefully at home on 3 February 2021, aged 95, after a long fight with cancer 6

Godfrey had a telephone at South Egliston – its number was ‘Kimmeridge 216″.
House 2 Family
Herbert John House (1889-1958)
Herbert was born at East Chaldon on 9 February 1889. He was the son of William House (1848-1934), born at East Knighton, and his wife Mary Jane House nee Hammett (1848-1908), born at Tolpuddle. Mary’s mother was a Loveless and those familiar with the Tolpuddle Martyrs will recognise the surnames of Hammett and Loveless.
Herbert was baptised at Chaldon Herring on 17 March 1889. His father William’s trade was recorded as carpenter.
Two years later, Herbert was living in the Dairyhouse at Affpuddle with his parents and four older siblings. His father William was now a dairy farmer. By 1901 his father was farming at Fossil Farm, East Chaldon which he continued until his death in 1934.
We have not yet been able to establish where Herbert was living at the time of the 1901 census.
In 1911, Herbert was living with his mother and father at Fossil Farm.
Herbert married Jessie Emily Pitcher Bowditch (1893-1978) –
By 1915 7 Herbert and Jessie had moved to Tyneham parish and had a tenement and land at Povington.
Herbert and Jessie had six children:
- William House (1913-2001) – William was born on 5 October 1913 – he married Violet Ruth Collins (1917-1993) at Tyneham on 18 October 1936 – in 1939 William was farming at South Egliston – he died in 2001 aged 88
- Albert Arthur House (1916-1999) – Albert was born on 25 March 1916 – he died in 1999 aged 83
- Gerald House (1918-2006) – Gerald was born on 23 February 1918 – he died in 2006 aged 87
- Sylvia House (1919-1999) – Sylvia was born on 19 August 1919 – she married George Francis Braisby (1917-2000) of Blackmanston Farm, Steeple on 23 May 1943 – they were the last couple to be married at Tyneham Church – Sylvia died on 30 June 1999 aged 79 and George died on 23 October 2000 aged 83
- Gwendoline ‘Gwen’ House (1923-2016) – Gwen was born on 18 September 1923 at Searley’s Holding, Povington – Gwen married Frank Dicker and they had two sons and a daughter – the family moved to Salisbury – Gwen died on 13 July 2016 aged 92
- Poppy Ciceley House (1925-2006) – Poppy was born on 21 June 1925 – she was 18 when evacuated – Poppy married Clifford Budden (1922-1967) in 1946 and they had three children – in 1980 Poppy married Gilbert Frank Ingram (1921-1991) – Poppy died in 2006 aged 81
On 29 September 1939 the family were recorded living at North Egliston Farm. The family were evacuated in December 1943.
Herbert later farmed North Holworth Farm near Owermoigne. He died on 15 August 1958 at Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester. 8 Jessie later lived at Crossways, Dorset and died on 11 April 1978 aged 84.
