The Dando Family lived at Tyneham from 1926 to c. 1929
Joseph Alfred ‘Joe’ Dando (1912-2002)
Joe was born at Radstock, Somerset on 29 March 1912 and baptised there on 26 April 1912. He was the eldest son of miner Oliver James Dando (1888-1941) and his wife Ada Maud Dando nee Butler (1888-1948).
Joe had four brothers, one who died shortly after birth, and a sister. However, Joe left home aged 14 before his three youngest brothers and sister were born.
Joe worked as a Servant for the Bond Family at Tyneham House from 1926 until 1930. It was there he met fellow servant Alice Edith ‘Rose’ Wellman, daughter of Bob & Alice Wellman.
Joe then worked for Major Charles Patrick Holroyd at Langton House, Langton Long near Blandford.
After the Major’s death in 1932, his widow Mrs Coral Holroyd moved to Fritham in the New Forest and Joe worked for her there. Meanwhile Rose secured employment in Lyndhurst to be nearer Joe and she was then invited by Mrs Holroyd to be her housemaid at Fritham to be with Joe.
Joe and Rose married in 1934.
Joe and Rose had twelve children – seven boys and five girls. Sadly their first-born child Anthony G Dando (1934-1944) died at the age of just nine.
Joe and Rose worked for a short while for Cicely Yeatman (William Henry Bond’s eldest daughter) at Stock Gaylard.
By September 1939 Joe, Rose and son Anthony were at Steeple Leaze Farm. Joe, a farm worker, was also cook for the evacuation camp and Rose, performing unpaid domestic duties, was a St. John’s first aider.
In 1949, Joe was employed as a dairyman by Mr A Vickery of Kimmeridge Farm.
Rose died on 11 May 1992 aged 79 and was buried at Kimmeridge. Joe died on 5 January 2002 aged 89.
